Take the operator away from the furnace door, without changing your probes, your PLC or your production rhythm.
The Starmet manipulator replaces manual temperature measurement and sampling at the EAF furnace door. It works on AC and DC furnaces, and it can operate with the furnace energized in high-temperature, dusty, high-radiation conditions. The operator loads the probe at a safe standby position. The arm then runs the in-furnace cycle along a preset trajectory: it inserts the probe, measures or samples, and withdraws on the same path.
Applicable furnaces | AC & DC electric arc furnaces |
Cycle time | ≤ 90 s per measuring / sampling cycle (measuring period 40 s) |
Max. lance travel speed | 30 m/min |
Temperature measurement success rate | ≥ 95%* |
Sampling success rate | ≥ 95%* |
Lance length | Approx. 4.3 m |
Control system | Siemens PLC + HMI (customer's existing industrial PC can be reused) |
Integration | Interfaces with the EAF PLC / automation system |
Operating modes | Automatic (one-key) / Manual / Maintenance |
Power supply | 380 V ±5%, 50 Hz, 3-phase, ≤ 10 kW |
Data | Local storage + cloud backup; traceable measuring and sampling history |
*Excluding probe-related factors, and provided the lance entry at the furnace door is not blocked by slag.
· Standard probes, no lock-in. The lance front section takes the thermocouple probes you already use, so spare parts stay unified.
· Precise, repeatable depth. Dual encoders show the lance position in real time. Retract and measuring positions are set on the HMI, so every heat follows the same path and timing.
· Built for the heat. The lance shaft is gas-cooled and the arm has a heat-insulation suit, which reduces heat damage and maintenance cost. A lance-shaft obstruction protection device and end-position limit switches add safety.
· Never stops your heat. In Maintenance mode the arm parks in standby and the crew goes back to manual measuring at once, with no impact on production.
· Data-ready. Results go straight to your EAF automation system, giving closed-loop process data and full heat-by-heat traceability.
Traditional manual | Starmet manipulator | |
Operator position | At the furnace door | Away from the furnace door |
Safety exposure | High-temperature burns, splash scalds, fume | Door-side exposure for measuring and sampling eliminated |
Insertion path & depth | Depends on operator experience | Preset trajectory, depth set on HMI with encoder feedback |
Repeatability | Varies by operator and shift | Same path and timing every heat |
Data | Manually read and recorded | Auto-collected, stored, traceable, shareable with EAF PLC |
Fallback | – | One switch back to manual (Maintenance mode) |
